Isaac Wilson is the Utah QB of the future, might be better than his brother
The Battle of the Brothers is always a special event. Utah and Utah State don't play often and it isn't the same type of rivalry as Utah/byu or even Utah State/byu but the game is always fun, and always competitive. Saturday was no different. I'm not a huge box score type of fan but because I only really watched the first 3 quarters of the game, I need to rely on the box score more than I typically would. On a side note, I missed the final quarter because I had to attend a wedding. Who gets married during football season? Talk about a scam.
Isaac Wilson had a pretty solid game: 20/33, 239 yds, 3 tds, 1 int. For a freshman, starting in a rivalry game on the road, that's solid. Not great, not bad but solid. Didn't do anything to lose the game and looked really confident in the pocket. Cam Rising, who is absolutely the guy and should remain the unquestioned starter, in his first game starting posted: 13/23 and 137 yds. That was during the 2021 season at home against Washington State who is, sorry Utah State fans, probably tougher competition than the Aggies. But comparing the two, Wilson absolutely posted a better state line. Remembering that he is still a freshman, although playing against different competition, Wilson's debut as a starter was probably objectively more impressive.
Don't forget--Cam Rising is absolutely the guy and, like I said, should be the unquestioned starter. This article isn't meant to be a call for Wilson to start. Cam Rising led the Utes to back to back Pac-12 championships and Rose Bowl appearances. My point is simply that beginning next year, hopefully after Rising has a standout year and stays healthy and finds his way to the NFL, Isaac Wilson will then step in and pick up where Cam left off.
Isaac Wilson had some seriously impressive throws as well, including his second touchdown, just before halftime-- a toss up in the corner to tight end Caleb Lohner. I can already hear the haters in my head saying, "Lohner's a 6'7'' basketball player, that was more of a great catch than a great throw" blah, blah, blah. All I say was a DIME throwing it to the one spot that his receiver was gonna go up and get it. As the game went on, Wilson continued to look poised and confident in the pocket, including another dime corner route to wide receiver Money Parks about halfway through the 3rd quarter. Dropped it in between 2 defenders, right along the sideline--extremely impressive throw.
Zach Wilson had an impressive college career down south in Provo, Utah. Culminating in his 2nd overall pick to the Jets--who ruined him, in my opinion. Getting a fresh start in Denver, even if he didn't win the job, will be really good for him in the long term. He had over over 7,000 yards passing and only 15 ints over his 3 year career as a starter. Very impressive. As a fan, I have a tendency to get ahead of myself and probably put too much pressure on an 18 year old kid playing football but... my hot take is that Isaac Wilson is going to have a better college career than his brother. His career trajectory will skyrocket if the Utes can successfully recruit in state 5-star wide receiver Jerome Myles who was Isaac Wilson's teammate at Corner Canyon High School.
Utah football is always exciting. They are one of the favorites to win the Big 12 this year and are consistently recruiting good talent and pumping out NFL players. They may not be at the top of the recruiting classes but they have always been really good developers and I don't think that's gonna change anytime soon. The University of Utah is a top-class university, and their football team isn't far behind. Go Utes!
