Playoff Baseball
October is the start of the best sports season during the calendar year. I've talked about it before but I don't think it gets enough credit. Football is in full swing, both college and NFL, hockey and basketball season is starting, and playoff baseball is about to kick off. There really is nothing quite like sports in October. March tends to get talked about a little more but honestly the only good thing about springtime sports is March Madness. But we're focusing on baseball here today and baseball in the spring isn't nearly as good as baseball in October
Now, I'm a Red Sox fan. The Sox have been out of the playoff for like the last month. There was a little push at the end of August but I had accepted their fate a long time ago. That team just really wasn't that good. In my despair I decided that I wanted to have some excitement in my life so I began looking for a team to support in their playoff push and I landed on the New York Mets, and oh baby did they deliver. They are one of the hottest teams in baseball since June and they have incredible vibes right now culminating in one of the greatest baseball games that I have ever witnessed against the Atlanta Braves. The game was the perfect encapsulation of being a Mets fan, or so I've been told, with the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. The only difference being that this season, it didn't end in disappointment. It has been an incredible run for the Mets as they open up their playoff run today against the Milwaukee Brewers. I really think they've got a shot at winning this series and then against the Phillies, anything can happen. Especially when a team is hot.
October baseball is incredible. Hot teams can create magic and we've seen magical runs in the past. See the Arizona Diamondbacks last year who were a wild card team and then made a run to the World Series beating the Dodgers and the Phillies along the way in the NL. One of the best parts of playoff baseball is also the most painful. Every pitch feels huge and when things go wrong, they go SO wrong. Things can fall apart so quick, or the opposite can be true. The 2004 Red Sox series comeback down 3-0 against the Yankees is a perfect example. Every single pitch was massive and every time someone stepped in the batters box, or got on base, you were just waiting for something magical to happen. Playoff baseball has a unique way of uniting everyone together for these special moments in time. Competing with football on Saturday and Sunday is difficult but its a perfect time to multitask.
Deciding to support the Mets as they made their push into the playoffs has been incredible. It made me fall in love with baseball again. I may not be a true blue Mets fan but I've had so much fun, I might just have to convert myself. I doubt it would work like that but who knows! Baseball is awesome and playoff baseball is like 100x awesomer. Cheers baseball fans, and LETS GO METS.
